On Wednesday, Corning has introduced its Gorilla Glass 5 for flagship smartphones. The company said that the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 has survived up to 80% of the time when dropped face-down from up to 1.6 metres.
Corning Gorilla Glass 5 was tested on all type of surfaces, even rough ones. It is now commercially available. One can expect to see this on devices later this year.
Corning said that it is the leader in cover glass industry and over 4.5 billion devices used Corning Gorilla Glass throughout the world, that includes more than 1,800 product variants across 40 major brands.
Corning Gorilla Glass 5 has been designed remembering consumers’ top issue – screen breakage. Corning also says that Gorilla Glass 5 will offer cover glass that’s suitable for touching, typing, swiping the content.
As per the reports of the study, over 85% of mobile users drop their phones at least once year, 55% users drop three times or more, 60% smartphone users reported dropping their mobile between shoulder and waist height. The study was based on the smartphone users of 11 nations, which includes the US, Brazil, France, Germany and India among others.
John Bayne, who is the Vice President and General Manager, of Corning Gorilla Glass told that they had taken cover glass technology to new level with the launch of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. It expands Corning’s advantage in drop performance over other glasses. Most of the drops occurs between should and waist height, Corning knew enhancing drop performance would be an important and essential improvement.
